Sherrie Riebel will seek re-election to a fifth four-year term as Allen County clerk. She was first elected in 1996.

Riebel’s association with the office began in 1993 when she was hired as clerk. Jill Foster, who came three months before Riebel, is her elections deputy and has 19 years experience. Joyce Foster, deputy clerk, has been on board eight years and Shannon Patterson, a clerk, a year and a half.

The clerk’s office is the face of the courthouse, where most people go first before being directed elsewhere for specific needs.

General budget construction starts in Riebel’s office and all matters to do with elections, from voter registration to ballots, originate there. After values are established, Riebel and her staff are responsible for setting tax levies and most matters associated with taxes until the point of collection, which is done in the treasurer’s office.

Department of Wildlife, Parks and  Tourism licenses are sold in the clerk’s office, and Riebel and her staff deal with homestead tax relief applications, audit tax and motor vehicle information, pay bills and issue payroll checks. Riebel also is the commissioners’ secretary.

“Never a dull moment,” said Riebel, 52, whose husband, Joe, works for Gates Corporation.

The deadline to file for all county offices is noon June 1.
